Name That Panda

The dilema: I hate China’s human rights problems…. but pandas are awesome. What am I talking about? I’m talking about China asking people to help name the eighteen panda cubs that were recently born.

baby pandaOf course you’ll need to know Chinese to participate, or at least that’s what looks to be the case. Even using Google’s translation service I can’t quite figure out what’s what. On the bright side I did stumble onto this image! If anyone does manage to figure out how to participate in English (unlikely I’m guessing) please let me know. The naming period ends the first week of February, so if you have a friend who reads Chinese make them help you right now before you forget.

What would you name this panda? I’m thinking he (or she?) should be named Norbert the Magnificent, but that’s just my first idea and shows that maybe it is a good thing I can’t name any pandas.

At anyrate sixteen of these neat looking buggers were all born at the China Conservation and Research Center for the Giant Panda in Sichuan, the other two were born in the US. In case you are wondering, eighteen panda cubs is a record. Pandas are still way endangered and maybe always will be, but at least it looks like we’ll always be able to make test tube pandas.

Who knows, in another ten years we might be able to miniaturize them. Who wouldn’t want a mini-panda as a pet? The best part is you wouldn’t have to worry about getting them neutered. The worse part might be having to grow your own bamboo to satisfy their wooden hunger.
